Where Did the Production Go?

Johnson Ranch is one of the planned communities that make up San Tan Valley, and the Solar Panel Repair question we expect most often here is a simple one: why is my system making less power than it used to? There is rarely one answer. A drop in output can come from the glass, the wiring, the inverter, the utility side or the monitoring itself, and guessing gets expensive. Testing in order is cheaper.

Our troubleshooting order

1. Read the history. Compare daily production on clear days, same month, year over year. Note when the drop started and whether it was sudden or gradual. 2. Check the easy things. Breakers, the DC and AC disconnects, the inverter display and any error log. 3. Look at the glass. Dust, droppings and new shade from trees, a neighbor's addition or a satellite dish. 4. Test the strings. Measure voltage and current on each string and compare them with each other and with the panel specs. 5. Isolate the fault. A low string gets narrowed down to a connector, a damaged wire run or a failing panel. 6. Confirm. After the fix, we watch the monitoring to make sure output is back where it should be.

Why gradual drops are common here

San Tan Valley gets about 8.7 inches of rain a year, and the area has open desert and farm fields nearby. Dust settles steadily, and in a dry spell nothing washes it off. A gradual slide that recovers after a hard rain is usually soiling. A gradual slide that does not recover after a cleaning is more likely hardware: connectors that have baked for years, or a panel with failing cells.

Why sudden drops happen

Sudden drops point to something that broke: an inverter that faulted, a microinverter that quit, a breaker that tripped during a storm or a wire chewed by a bird. Those are the easiest problems to find with the right tests, and often the quickest to fix.

Homes of the boom years

Most homes in the wider San Tan Valley were built between 2000 and 2009, and the median build year is 2007. Arrays added to these homes now span more than one generation of equipment, sometimes with panels added later on a different inverter. Mixed systems can be harder to read in the app, so we map out what you have before chasing a fault.

Johnson Ranch Questions

Should I clean my panels before calling for repairs?

If they are visibly dirty and you can safely rinse them from the ground, it is a useful first test. If output does not recover afterward, the problem is electrical.

Can low production be the utility's fault?

Grid voltage that runs high can cause some inverters to trip. The inverter's event log usually shows this, and it is one of the things we check.

Some of my panels were added later. Is that a problem?

It can make the data harder to read, especially if the additions use a different inverter. We map the whole system before troubleshooting.
